The math on 1,000 table orders a month
Take a restaurant with 1,000 QR orders a month at $40, or $40,000 in table orders.
- Ser.vi: the restaurant pays $0. No monthly fee, no commission and no card fee. Guests pay 5%, which is $2.00 on each $40 order, or $2,000 across the month.
- Toast: ask for two numbers. You pay the Mobile Order & Pay subscription plus card processing on all $40,000. Toast publishes neither. As a yardstick, every 1 percentage point of card rate on $40,000 is $400 a month, before any per-transaction fee.
Read the Ser.vi line honestly: the cost doesn't vanish, it moves to the guest. If you'd rather not add a fee to your guests' checks, a system where the restaurant pays processing may suit you better. And if you are already on Toast and happy with it, Mobile Order & Pay plugs into the menu, kitchen routing and guest data you already have. Ser.vi is the better fit when you want QR ordering without a monthly bill, your POS on the iPad you already own with $0 monthly software, and online ordering at 0% commission on the same menu.
Ser.vi's other fees work the same way: online pickup and delivery orders are 0% commission with the guest paying 5%, and staff-entered POS orders are 3.0% + 20¢, paid by the restaurant by default or passed to customers with a cash discount program. See who pays the online ordering fee.

Questions restaurants ask
- How much does Toast Mobile Order & Pay cost?
- Toast doesn't publish a price. On the Toast pages we read on October 31, 2026, Mobile Order & Pay is listed as a feature you can add under the custom-priced "Build Your Own" plan, and Toast's setup guide calls it a paid module you subscribe to in the Toast Shop. Card processing on those orders is paid by the restaurant, and Toast doesn't print that rate on its pricing page either. Ask your Toast rep for both numbers in writing.
- What is a good alternative to Toast Mobile Order & Pay?
- If you want QR order-and-pay without a monthly fee, Ser.vi is one option: guests scan a code at the table or counter, order and pay from their phone browser with no app, and the order prints to your kitchen printer. The restaurant pays no monthly fee, no commission and no card fee on QR orders; the guest pays a flat 5% at checkout. Square, Clover and Lightspeed include QR ordering in some of their paid plans; our roundup of QR ordering systems compares them on published prices. Compare QR ordering systems
- Does Toast Mobile Order & Pay need Toast hardware?
- It runs on the Toast POS. Toast's setup guide asks for a Toast device to act as the auto-firing device for kitchen tickets, and Toast's pricing FAQ says Toast may only be used on approved Toast hardware. The Ser.vi POS runs on your existing iPad (iPadOS 15 or later), and Ser.vi hardware is optional, charged separately and offered on terms.
- Who pays the fees on QR orders?
- On Toast Mobile Order & Pay the restaurant pays card processing on each order, plus the module subscription. On Ser.vi the guest pays a flat 5% at checkout, which is $2.00 on a $40 order, and that covers card processing and the platform. The restaurant pays $0 on QR orders. The cost doesn't disappear, it moves to the guest, so decide whether you're comfortable with that before you switch.
- Can guests run a tab with QR ordering?
- Toast's Mobile Order & Pay has two modes: Tabs, where guests order several rounds and pay at the end, and Pay-as-you-go, where they pay each time they order. If your bar or full-service room depends on guests running a tab from the QR code, bring that to a Ser.vi demo and we'll show how it fits your service style. Ser.vi's POS itself handles open table tabs, bar tabs, split payments and tableside pay.
- Can I keep Toast as my POS and use Ser.vi just for QR ordering?
- This page assumes you move to the Ser.vi POS, which has $0 monthly software and puts QR ordering, online ordering and the POS on one menu. If you want to keep Toast, ask us in a demo and we'll tell you straight whether Ser.vi QR ordering fits your setup.
